The following is taken from a St. Joseph's Church publication dated April 2003.

St. Joseph's Academy had its early beginnings in a one story wooden structure next to the original church on North Center Street. Enrollment averaged between 20 and 30 pupils. This was under the direction of Rev. Oderich Vogt and two Franciscan nuns.

In 1876 pastor Rev. H. A. Cluever met the growing needs of the church and school. A new two-story brick building was erected on the eastern side of Lafayette Street towards the rear of the new church site.

Father Cluever petitioned the Mother House of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet, in Troy NY, to take charge of the teaching. His petition was granted and the sisters began their work under the supervision of Mother Regina.

Within eight years the school once again proved to be too small to meet the growing needs of the population. Rev. J. H. Wibbe ordered that an addition be built. The new space was to occupy the land between the church and the school. This addition doubled the class room capacity to four but would soon be overcrowded in 15 years. This led Father Wibbe to buy the land across Lafayette Street. This most recent structure, pictured above, served until the last high school class graduated in 1960.
